Who We Are
Temple Beth Or
is an egalitarian, conservative congregation, modern yet reverent to
the Jewish tradition. As the spiritual center of our Jewish
community, our aim is to create a Jewish environment that is warm
and caring, meaningful and enriching. The congregation is made
up of about 250 families.
Our Rabbi
Rabbi
Royi Israel Shaffin born in Los Angeles, CA to two Israeli
parents and four Yiddish speaking grandparents - survivors of the
Holocaust, earned his Master of Arts and was ordained
a Conservative Rabbi at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York,
NY. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science
and Jewish Studies from the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, CA.
Rabbi Shaffin has served as the Rabbi
of Temple Emanu-el at Parkchester in the Bronx, NY and of Tifereth
Israel Synagogue in Lincoln, NE. He has also taught at the Jewish
Theological Seminary in New York, NY, at the University of Nebraska
Lincoln, and at the American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro, NC. In
addition, he has worked as a Visual History Cataloguer at the
Survivors of the Shoah Foundation in Los Angeles, CA.
Among his publications are “Zichronot
Hayofi”, a historical fiction short story published in Dor: A
Journal for Adult Children of the Holocaust and “My Rabbi, Mr.
DeRieux”, an entry in
A Tribute to a Teacher by Jeffrey Spoden.
Rabbi Shaffin, his wife, Shoshanna,
and their three daughters have played a
vital role in the Temple Beth Or community for the past two years.

Rabbi Emeritus
Rabbi Dr. Robert
E. Fierstien, spiritual leader of Temple Beth Or since
June 1976 until July 2008 is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of New York University,
holds an M.A., Rabbinical Ordination, and Doctorate from the
Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He is a published
author, a past president of the Shore Area Board of Rabbis, and is a
chairman of the Centennial History Committee of Rabbinical
Assembly.
Location
Temple Beth Or
is located in the lovely Jersey Shore community of Brick
Township. Brick is approximately 70 miles from New York City
and 60 miles from Philadelphia. The temple is easily
accessible from the Garden State Parkway SB Exit 91. It is
located just off State Highway Route 70, on Van Zile Road.
